Mendocino
Folklore Camp -est. 1962, in our 52 year Folklore Camp is a pioneer of folk dance camps in northern California began as a weekend in the town of Mendocino in 1962, followed the next year with a full week in town, then in 1964 camp moved to The Mendocino Woodlands Park. Madelynne Greene, the founder, wanted to start a camp in a woodsy setting and to also be a place where not only international folk dances were presented, but where music, customs, folklore and ethnic foods set the scene for a truly unique experience filled with cultural experiences and celebrations.
In 1970, Madelynne’s death left the camp in the care of other dedicated directors. Who's leadership over the years has helped Folklore Camp see growth and improvement in every possible way. True to Madelynne’s dream, the camp remains one of the most unique experiences of international folk culture in the United States. Superb dance and music teachers from all over the world have taught here and many dance teachers have made their premiere appearance in North America at Folklore Camp. There is an ever growing emphasis to dance to live music at camp, and we are very fortunate to have a talented roster of musicians who play for our "Camp Band" each year. MFC's Early Years..

Scandia Camp Mendocino is an annual week-long residential camp which presents participants the opportunity to learn in depth about the folk music, dance and cultural traditions of Scandinavia. Over the years, guests (many of them the original researchers and documentarians of their country's folk traditions) have come from Norway, Sweden and Finland to share their knowledge through daily dance, music and singing sessions, and cultural experiences. In the process, a community has developed of people exploring their cultural roots and of people with curiosity about and appreciation for the rich folk culture of Scandinavia. For a week, the Mendocino Woodlands becomes our common village, a second home.
