Mendocino Woodlands State Park, Camp 1

The workshops are set in The Mendocino Woodlands (a National Historic Landmark Camp), a lush 720-acre redwood forest nine miles inland from the charming Village of Mendocino, on the spectacular California coast, about a four-hour drive north of San Francisco. (interactive map).  While at the Woodlands, you can enjoy miles of peaceful hiking trails, a sunny meadow, wildlife watching, and a swimming hole a short walk away along a wooded creek.

Cabins

Camper cabins are charming and rustic with a stone fireplace, balcony, small closet, and four twin cots and mattresses. They do not have bedding, heat or electricity. Lanterns (battery) can be used for light in the cabins (NO candles or open flames are allowed!). Two cots can easily be pushed together to accommodate couples.  We usually assign two (same sex) campers to a cabin.  On full years we might have 3 campers sharing a cabin.  Families can fit up to 4 people per cabin.

The cabins are clustered into three groups and each of those groups has it’s own bathroom facility (a short walk up or down the trails) with lights, electrical outlets, toilets, showers, and hot water.  Plus a utility sink, iron & ironing board.

Dance Hall

Picture
The historic 1,800 sq. ft. dance hall has a sprung wooden floor, a huge stone fireplace and electricity.  The Dance Hall is located down the hill from the Lounge and Dining Hall.

The beautiful floor was recently refinished and provides a great dancing space. Morning dance classes are held in the Dance Hall along with Evening Dancing. The occasional happy hour party is also held in the Dance Hall.

To help cut down on dust on the dance floor, it is helpful to bring an separate pair of dance shoes to change into.

Lounge, Kitchen & Dining Hall

The long social/dining/kitchen main hall is the heart of the camp.  It's basically two dinning halls that branch off a central kitchen & serving area.  We use one of the end rooms as a LOUNGE for  early morning hang-time around the fireplace, classes & crafts during the day and in the evening for our folklore lectures, happy hour celebrations, sing alongs and late night Kafana (cabaret).   The room at the opposite end is our DINING ROOM where we gather daily to take meals together, the historic benches and tables add to the ambiance of camp. In the center is the KITCHEN, where master chef Tod Nysether and his crew create truly delicious meals daily.  The nationality of our menu changes daily, allowing our campers a unique opportunity to sample traditional cuisine from around the globe... all part of the Folklore Camp experience, we have long been known for the quality & diversity of our food.
