Pre-Camp: Teacher Notes
We do our best to get collect notes from teachers and publish them online before Camp. Because of the nature of certain folk arts, there is much that will only be available at Camp. For those teachers who have provided material in preparation for Camp, we have posted their material HERE. We will also update this link after the end of Camp with material collected at Folklore Camp.
The page is password protected, so it is only available to registered campers. It will be emailed to registered campers, or you can contacted the camp director at [email protected]

Our 2019 HAPPY HOUR CELEBRATIONS
Mix and mingle at Folklore Camp Happy Hour Celebrations! Each day we explore a different culture or theme. Influences from this year's cultural themes will be sprinkled throughout the day in both our happy hour parties and also in the meals. On other days it is the frontiers of the creative mind that are the territories traversed and explored, sparked by a bit of suggestion on our part. Our joy is to explore a new culture daily through music, dance, rituals, traditions, food and drink... plus infusing a bit of Folklore Camp fun along the way as well!
**Dressing up for our parties is part of the tradition & fun of our camp... Please join in if so inclined, but it’s not required**

SATURDAY - WHERE IN THE WORLD!
Where's Waldo? Where in the world is Carmen San Diego? Where have you been!? Come start off Camp with get-to-know-you mixers and ice breakers. Explore the world through your fellow campers! How many places can have you visited on the map? Come dressed representing your favorite destination, as a well-known explorer, or of course as a tired world-traveler who finally made it to the Mendocino Woodlands.
SUNDAY- 1920s SPEAKEASY
Pssst.... what's the password? Lay low to avoid the agents of the Bureau of Prohibition. Come on down to the whoopie spot, where the gin is cold, but the piano’s hot! Come in your favorite flapper dress, your spats and suspenders, and maybe even your tommy gun in case things heat up!
MONDAY - PURIM (ISRAEL)
"Rumor has it someone is trying to take over and rule camp... Will our campers be able to defeat these foul individuals? It will require some participation from you, but I have no doubt that all will be restored. You can dress as one of the characters (King Achashverosh, Esther, Haman, Mordechai, etc) of the Purim story. Crowns, capes, robes, dresses, tiaras! Or, like most Israelis, wear a creative costume, completely unrelated to the Purim story, so that your creativity will help defeat those who would ruin camp!
TUESDAY - горско село Мендочино (BALKAN VILLAGE)
Come celebrate the festive air of our Mendocino Woodlands Village. Smell the roasting lamb, mingle with the other village folk, and be ready to kick up some dust dancing! Wear traditional well-coined colorful Bulgarian (or other Balkan costumes), or come as an always welcome tourist ready to dance up a storm!
WEDNESDAY - WILD WILD WEST and LIVE AUCTION
Hey you city slickers, grab your hats and boots, and get your bones over to the Saloon for a wild Western stampede! We'll have a Tall Tale contest, Cowboy Poetry reading, and maybe even a jug band! Come as your favorite legendary cowboy or cowgirl, or a modern wrangler in cowboy hat, your sharpest shirt, jeans, bandanna, belts & buckles, and of course, your finest fringe!
THURSDAY - SCOTTISH BALL
The clans gather at the Linscott Pub for a Ceilidh with dancing, singing, games, and of course lifting a pint or a wee dram in honor of our decades of joyous revelry. Then musicians lead a merry procession up to the banquet hall for a traditional Robert Burns Supper, with raucous and poignant poetry, toasts, songs and feasting…
"Wi' quaffing and laughing they ranted and they sung;
Wi' jumping and thumping the vera girdle rung!"
Revelers, don formal or country casual attire, with tons of tartans!"
FRIDAY - ALOHA! FRIDAY'S FINAL FUN FAREWELL LUAU!
We say Aloha to Folklore Camp with one final night of celebration. Ohana means family, and we will celebrate our Folklore Camp Ohana with presentations from the week's workshops, along with memories of past camps!
Aloha ʻoe, aloha ʻoe
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo
One fond embrace, A hoʻi aʻe au
Until we meet again!

The Honora Costume Award
For one last time, we will be awarding campers for their costuming efforts at camp. Please refer to the Happy Hour Themes list above and plan to wear your craziest or most authentic costumes at the Happy Hour events.
The Winner in the Individual and Youth Categories will receive the traditional hand-made “Silver Hanger” fabric and bone pin engraved with the year 2019. This year we will also be awarding a few other categories with a handmade item designed especially for the 2019 final year of Folklore Camp.
Categories:
1. Individual - Honorary Mention and Winner
2. Youth - (ages 15 to 25) Honorary Mention and Winner
3. Couples - Honorary Mention and Winners
4. Family - Honorary Mention and Winners
The award pins are hand-made and donated by artist and designer, Christopher Miller. Since 2012, Chris has donated his artistic skills in designing and creating these pins in honor of Honora Forscutt. For many years, Honora graced camp with her presence at each Happy Hour event with creative and fun costumes. Thanks to all the campers who each year have made the decided effort to keep her memory alive by bringing their creative or authentic costumes to share with us all at camp. It’s part of what makes Folklore so special.

ACTIVITIES:
Part of the fun that is “Folklore” is to participate in camp activities. A great way to do that is to volunteer for something during the week. It’s a great opportunity to get to know people; the camaraderie is fun and infectious! Maybe you could help plan and decorate for one of the parties during the week (especially for the teacher parties!), or help a teacher by keeping time for classes, or manning the music during a dance workshop class one day, or join the small crew that sets up the tables for dinner each night, or take a turn helping to man the bar in our happy hour celebrations or late night Kafana, or perhaps you’re an early riser and would like to help serve breakfast one morning? As you can see, there are many ways to participate and we whole-heartedly encourage it.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
The camp is set in a lush redwood forest nine miles inland from the spectacular coastline at Mendocino. The historic dance hall, dining room and lounge have wooden floors, fireplaces and electricity. Camper cabins are charming and rustic with a stone fireplace, balcony, small closet, and four cots and mattresses. They do not have bedding, heat, or electricity. Lanterns (battery or propane) can be used to light in the cabins, but NO liquid fuel or candles are allowed! The cabins are clustered into three groups and each of those groups has its a central bathroom facility with lights, electrical outlets, toilets, showers, and hot water. There is also a central utility room with a washtub, ironing board & iron. It is also not uncommon for some campers to use chamber pots in their cabins at night.
Campers frequently bring an amazing variety of things to furnish their cabins; throw rugs, pressure rods to hang curtains or sheets for covering windows, small tables or TV trays for next to the bed, folding chairs, objects d’art, etc. Two cots can easily be pushed together to accommodate couples. Bringing “extra padding” to go on top of the camp mattresses is not a bad idea. As for bedding, many people use sleeping bags, but bringing your own sheets, blankets, feather beds or comforters from home can make for a very cozy nest. Firewood is readily available at camp, but may be damp. So you might want to bring your own firestarters or fire logs. DO NOT FORGET BUG REPELLENT, the mosquitoes can be vicious.

CLOTHING:
Most days will have a cultural theme. The meals, crafts, and celebrations during that day, and at the evening happy hour party, will attempt to recreate some of the traditions and folklore of a specific culture. A delightful option, if you are so inclined, is “dressing up” for the themed happy hour celebrations (parties).
There are a few costume pieces and props at camp that campers can borrow during the week. And there will also be a small bazaar with items that will be for sale. WE NEED DONATIONS for the bazaar & auction, so please keep us in mind while packing. Thanks!
Depending on your interests, you also may want to bring appropriate clothing for hiking, or for an invigorating swim at the nearby swimming hole.

LOANER INSTRUMENTS and MEDIA STATION:
Please bring instruments that you plan on playing! Feel free to bring one to loan too!
Workshop Media Station: At camp there will be a “tech. station” where you will be able to access pdf docs of teacher notes or mp3 files of the teacher’s practice music. You can either download to your USB drive or media device or burn a disc (bring your own USB drive or discs). PLEASE NOTE: there will be NO printed dance syllabus for sale at camp, but dance notes will be posted on our web page at the beginning of June (password protected, for registered campers only) so you can print them out yourself from home. There will also be a USB hub and power strip available to campers in the tech room for recharging electronics and cell phones.

CAMP AUCTION:
A highlight of camp is our entertaining auction that raises money for scholarships and to keep this camp alive. As we are a non-profit organization, all donations are tax-deductible. We welcome donations of art, folk-related items, jewelry, culinary specialties (homemade jellies, jams, cookie dough, alcohol etc.), special services (compositions, massages, serenades etc.), ethnic costumes & folk-related dance clothes (skirts, shirts, shoes, shawls, sashes).
