4:45 p.m. - New Camper Orientation (meet-up at the registration table)
5:30 p.m. - Happy Hour Celebration – We welcome you to camp with our “Let it Glow” mixer! (lounge)
6:30 p.m. - Dinner followed by Staff & Teacher Introductions & Class Previews (dining hall)
8:00 p.m. - Dance Class Previews followed by our Opening Dance Party (Linscott Hall)

Our 2018 HAPPY HOUR CELEBRATIONS
Mix and mingle at Folklore Camp Happy Hour Celebrations! Each day we explore a different culture or theme. Influences from this year's cultural themes will be sprinkled throughout the day in both our happy hour parties and also in the meals. On other days it is the frontiers of the creative mind that are the territories traversed and explored, sparked by a bit of suggestion on our part. Our joy is to explore a new culture daily through music, dance, rituals, traditions, food and drink... plus infusing a bit of Folklore Camp fun along the way as well!
**Dressing up for our parties is part of the tradition & fun of our camp... Please join in if so inclined, but it’s not required**
SATURDAY - LET IT GLOW!
Come enjoy an opening mixer with you brightest neon or other 'glowing' clothes. It's a fun way to kick off Camp.
SUNDAY- GREEK MYTHOLOGY
Whether you want to be a god (like Zeus, Poseidon & Apollo) a goddesses (like Aphrodite, Hera & Athena), a Titans like (like Atlas or Cronus) or a hero (like Perseus or Hercules) this is the night to let you creative side come out!
MONDAY - BULGARIAN SPRING FESTIVAL
Celebrating the lively traditions of a Bulgarian Spring, come decked out in your favorite Balkan outfit and be ready to join in the celebration.
TUESDAY - DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
An evening to honor and celebrate the dead in Mexican style. Skulls (calaveras), Marigolds (cempasúchil), bright colors (colores brillantes), and altars (ofredas) will be aplenty.
WEDNESDAY - JAPANESE DINNER and LIVE AUCTION
Kimonos (robes) and Getas (footwear) will be welcome as we browse the silent auction items during our happy hour celebration. As with the other nights, you are always welcome to don your favorite Hawaiian Aloha shirt and join the party as a tourist!
THURSDAY - TURKISH BAZAAR
The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, and we hope to capture a bit of that magic in the Mendocino Woodlands. As a meeting place of many cultures, you're likely to see clothing from across the middle-east. Teachers, musicians, and vendors will also be able to sell their wares so come ready to go home with some treasures.

A throw-back to simpler times before Facebook and MySpace when Radio Ruled. Enjoy an evening of nostalgic Americana with radio skits, wacky broadcasts, and of course, presentations from the weeks workshops.

ACTIVITIES:
Part of the fun that is “Folklore” is to participate in camp activities. A great way to do that is to volunteer for something during the week. It’s a great opportunity to get to know people; the camaraderie is fun and infectious! Maybe you could help plan and decorate for one of the parties during the week (especially for the teacher parties!), or help a teacher by keeping time for classes, or manning the music during a dance workshop class one day, or join the small crew that sets up the tables for dinner each night, or take a turn helping to man the bar in our happy hour celebrations or late night Kafana, or perhaps you’re an early riser and would like to help serve breakfast one morning? As you can see, there are many ways to participate and we whole-heartedly encourage it.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
The camp is set in a lush redwood forest nine miles inland from the spectacular coastline at Mendocino. The historic dance hall, dining room and lounge have wooden floors, fireplaces and electricity. Camper cabins are charming and rustic with a stone fireplace, balcony, small closet, and four cots and mattresses. They do not have bedding, heat, or electricity. Lanterns (battery or propane) can be used to light in the cabins, but NO liquid fuel or candles are allowed! The cabins are clustered into three groups and each of those groups has its a central bathroom facility with lights, electrical outlets, toilets, showers, and hot water. There is also a central utility room with a washtub, ironing board & iron. It is also not uncommon for some campers to use chamber pots in their cabins at night.
Campers frequently bring an amazing variety of things to furnish their cabins; throw rugs, pressure rods to hang curtains or sheets for covering windows, small tables or TV trays for next to the bed, folding chairs, objects d’art, etc. Two cots can easily be pushed together to accommodate couples. Bringing “extra padding” to go on top of the camp mattresses is not a bad idea. As for bedding, many people use sleeping bags, but bringing your own sheets, blankets, feather beds or comforters from home can make for a very cozy nest. Firewood is readily available at camp, but may be damp. So you might want to bring your own firestarters or fire logs. DO NOT FORGET BUG REPELLENT, the mosquitoes can be vicious.

The meals, crafts, and celebrations during that day, and at the evening happy hour party, will attempt to recreate some of the traditions and folklore of a specific culture. A delightful option, if you are so inclined, is “dressing up” for the themed happy hour celebrations (parties).
There are a few costume pieces and props at camp that campers can borrow during the week. And there will also be a small bazaar with items that will be for sale. WE NEED DONATIONS for the bazaar & auction, so please keep us in mind while packing. Thanks!

You can either download to your USB drive or media device or burn a disc (bring your own USB drive or discs). PLEASE NOTE: there will be NO printed dance syllabus for sale at camp, but dance notes will be posted on our web page at the beginning of June (password protected, for registered campers only) so you can print them out yourself from home. There will also be a USB hub and power strip available to campers in the tech room for recharging electronics and cell phones.

CAMP AUCTION:
A highlight of camp is our entertaining auction that raises money for scholarships and to keep this camp alive. As we are a non-profit organization, all donations are tax-deductible. We welcome donations of art, folk-related items, jewelry, culinary specialties (homemade jellies, jams, cookie dough, alcohol etc.), special services (compositions, massages, serenades etc.), ethnic costumes & folk-related dance clothes (skirts, shirts, shoes, shawls, sashes).
SUGGESTIONS FOR PACKING.. (The stores are a 30-40 minute drive into town)

Driving Directions to the Woodlands
(It’s about a 4-hour drive north from the San Francisco Bay Area to Camp)
From the NORTH – Take Hwy. 101 to Willits, go West on Hwy. 20 to Fort Bragg, then South on Hwy. 1 to Mendocino
From the SOUTH – Take Hwy. 101 to Cloverdale, take Hwy. 128 West (just north of town); follow 128 to the coast then
drive North on Hwy. 1 to Mendocino.
TO CAMP FROM MENDOCINO – Off of Hwy. 1, turn East onto “Little Lake Road” (a signal light). Drive about 6 miles until
you see the entrance to the Woodlands (look for our Folklore signs!). Follow the dirt road another 4 miles to camp.
From the SOUTH – Take Hwy. 101 to Cloverdale, take Hwy. 128 West (just north of town); follow 128 to the coast then
drive North on Hwy. 1 to Mendocino.
