2016 Party Themes
For our Happy Hour Folklore Celebrations, we explore a different theme each day that is reflected in both our happy hour parties and also in the meals. Respectfully exploring a new culture daily through their music, dance, rituals, traditions, food and drink... plus infusing a bit of Folklore Camp fun along the way as well!
**Dressing up for our parties is part of the tradition & fun of our camp... Join in if so inclined, but it’s not required**
FOLKLORE CAMP 2016 PARTY THEMES (in order at camp - Saturday - Friday)
- 60’s BEACH PARTY – Come dressed ready for a little “Beach Blanket Bingo” fun. Find your inner “Frankie & Annette”, “Gidget & Moondoggie” or be part of a motorcycle gang, or a body builder from Muscle Beach. Then we’ll “stroll” on down to the “Beach Shake-Shack” to dance a little Mashed Potatoes, Hully Gully and the Wahtusi. Men, it’s white pants, cut off jeans, swim trunks & short-sleeved shirts. Ladies, it’s bathing suits & cover-ups, headscarves, pedal pushers, shorts, crop tops and stripe tees. Grab your surfboards, flip-flops and beach towels everyone, it’s time for some fun in the sun Mendo style. SURF’S UP!
- Dr. SEUSS COMES TO CAMP (Oh the places you’ll go!) – Dr. Seuss thinks there is fun to be done, points to be scored, and games to be won! Oh the magical things you can do; one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish. Come with socks in your hair, a fox in the box, a cat in a hat. Whatever rhymes or riddles we do, the winning-est winner is you!
- JEWISH (Woodlands Purim Carnival) – The general topsy-turvy spirit of Purim include parades, costumes, masks, carnival atmosphere and general merrymaking & celebration. At the center of these activities, you find the Purim shpiel, a Yiddish word for skits or plays, usually a comedy or farce with the actors wearing costumes that depict the characters from the story in the Book of Esther. There will be feasting, gifts of charity to the poor, and gifts of food (hamantaschen cookies) among friends. It is also unique among Jewish holidays in that adults are encouraged to drink.. a lot!
- BULGARIAN (Summer Wedding) – Let us bring good luck to our engaged couple as they start their life together, with fun teasing and traditions of fortune. We’ll follow the groom as he gathers up his soon-to-be bride in her home, then follow them in merry-making and cheer as the bride and groom finalize their love for each other! Then we’ll enjoy a traditional meal, and dance the night away until the flowers fall from our hair and the bread is broken!
- THE KINGS GALA (The Knights Feast & Auction) – Hear ye! Hear ye! All ye Royals, Knights and Nobles… By decree of our Lord and Lady of the Woodlands, all peoples of the Redwoods are invited to attend a gala in honor of the King. In the afternoon, when the clock strikes half after the fifth hour, we shall gather upon the knoll to drink and be merry, admire displayed trinkets & treasures and put quill to vellum in verse & sonnet. I bid you join in the feast and celebration, and perchance win thyself some riches. Finally, we dance the night away in squares and lines with all of noble and peasant blood.
- CROATIAN (“Prostenje”) – Our little village of Mendocino is having a feast day in celebration of Saint Vitus (Sveti Vid), the patron saint of dance! On this festive occasion, we’ll be gathering in the beautifully decorated village square to socialize with friends & family from all over Croatia, beautifully festooned in their regional costumes. There will be dancing, sampling specialty foods, and shopping the merchant booths for that perfect ribbon, braid or set of beads to decorate your clothing. Bring along a few Kuna (Croatian money) to purchase your Licitar souvenir (highly decorated cookie). It’s time to celebrate and make merry till dawn!
- CAMP MARKETPLACE & STUDENT SHOWCASE - We begin Friday’s happy-hour party early, with a fun & frivolous “Bowler Hats, Bow Ties & Feathered Boas” theme. It’s an afternoon of student showcases, good food & drink. Stop by the teacher/camper vendor tables for their dance/music DVD/CD’s & wares, and the camp bazaar/store for a last minute sale item. After, we’ll be dining, giving thanks & acknowledgements for our week at camp, followed by a blowout dance party!
