Mendocino Folklore Camp

Each summer since 1962, folk dancers from across the United States and beyond have gathered at the beautiful Mendocino Woodlands to share a unique celebration of ethnic dance, music, and culture. Folklore Camp, pioneered by Madelynne Greene, was the first folk dance camp to use the Woodlands, and today we carry on the tradition and spirit of this ever popular event.

The Mendocino Woodlands, a National Historic Landmark Camp, is in a 720 acre redwood forest nine miles inland from the charming village of Mendocino on the spectacular California coast, about a four hour drive north of San Francisco. The serenity and beauty of this secluded retreat provide an idyllic setting to do what we love best - dance, eat, relax and celebrate!

Activities
The morning dance, music and singing classes are enhanced with possible afternoon choices of folklore sessions, special dance workshops, crafts, sight-seeing or relaxing. There are miles of peaceful hiking trails, a nature center, a sunny meadow, and a swimming hole a short walk along a wooded creek. We have special theme days, highlighting the diversity of cultures. It amazes people how the Woodlands is transformed with decorations, ethnic food, and activities to celebrate cultural traditions. The evening dance parties are enlivened by our superb international dance band! Late night revelers can enjoy request dancing or musical jam sessions by the cozy fire in our kafana.

Accommodations
Campers stay in delightful rustic cabins nestled in the majestic redwoods. Each cabin has a stone fireplace and balcony, with bathrooms, showers and electricity up or down the trail nearby. A dance hall, central dining hall, lounge, redwood grove and amphitheater provide various areas for classes, meals, and daily activities.

Food
Three extraordinary "five star" meals and two snacks are provided daily, including banquets and a Balkan lamb roast. The gourmet international cuisine is known for its excellence, abundance, and creativity.

Don’t miss this incredible experience – join us in June for a memorable week of dancing and celebrating!

Ladarke: Each year at camp, a group of our campers gets together to sing Ladarke. Those not singing gather to enjoy the performance. It has become a special part of our camp experience. We also had an institute on Ladarke at our 2006 Fundraiser. There are different versions of Ladarke. Mark Forry researched them and provided the following history along with the words and music.
