TEACHING STAFF

DANCE TEACHERS

Squares & Contras - Lynn Ackerson
We are thrilled to welcome Lynn to Folklore Camp for the first time. She has been calling contras & squares since 1999 throughout the U.S. and Canada. Lynn’s teaching and calling are clear and easy to follow. She creates a warm, fun, friendly atmosphere and chooses dances that are interesting and challenging but ultimately accessible by all.

Hungarian – Istvan Szabo & Ellie Wiener
Istvan Szabo, known to his friends as “Kovacs,” received his dance training and degree at the prestigious Hungarian Ballet Institute in Budapest. He danced professionally with the Hungarian Army Ensemble and Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. He is also a past director and lead dancer with the Aman Folk Ensemble. Ellie Wiener has been teaching and dancing Hungarian dance for the last 17 years and is a past Director of Arankapu Hungarian Dance Camp. Kovacs & Ellie will be teaching complex, improvisational Hungarian dances to all skill levels. We look forward to their classes!

Party Themes

Daily international themes bring together meals, happy hour festivities, decorations and parties to create an atmosphere of celebration and learning. Each day combines folk arts, traditions, music, dance, humor and high spirits into a stunning cultural tapestry.

Our Happy Hour Party Themes This Year:

Magical Creatures & Mythical Beings — Think enchanted, mythical and magical beings. With characters found in the folklore of countries and cultures from around the world, we expect to see elves, ogres, wizards, and witches partying alongside leprechauns, unicorns, valkyrie and griffins.

Saint Valentine’s Ball — Celebrate the “Feast of Juno” with love, laughter, and lambs. Red and white are the colors of the day as our festive dance event honors both the goddess of women and marriage, Juno of ancient Rome, and Valentinus, the priest who championed love in the third century A.D.

Croatian – Tamburitza music rings through the woodlands when we join Željko as he once again shares his love and knowledge of Croatian folklore.

American – Lynn will guide us as we put the spotlight on American folklore with song, dance, and tall tales, whirligigs, and whimmy diddles.

Cajun – "LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER!” (Let the good times roll). Warm up for our yearly auction in our version of a Cajun Dance Hall.

Hungarian — Folklore Camp has its own “Tanzhaus,” and Kovacs is the host. Polish your boots and put on your finest Hungarian wear for an incredible evening with songs and dances of the Magyars.

Old Time Radio Hour — KWRN, the Woodlands Radio Network, is on the air and you the campers are supplying the script, the voices, and the special effects.
