PARTY THEMES
Meals, happy hour festivities, decorations & parties work together to create an atmosphere of celebration and learning. Each weaves folk arts, traditions, high spirits, humor and magic into our stunning international tapestry. Our “Teacher Parties” this year are Balkan, French-Canadian, and Tango. Each of our dance teachers will have a party that reflects some aspect of their dances and the related culture. When you register, you will receive more information on all the parties in a second flyer that comes out towards the end of April.
Our Party Themes this Year are ...
Folklore Film Festival — A celebration of movies, from Hollywood to Bollywood. Come as your favorite film character from any film, any period.Indonesia’s Hari Kemerdekaan — It’s Independence Day - Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese or Batak, this is the one day that everyone comes out, and with one united voice, commemorates Independence and unity in diversity. The national colors are red & white so bring your favorite sarong, your best batik shirt and get ready for lots of lombas (games & contests).
Bulgarian – We will attempt to re-create the almost forgotten "Nestinari" firewalking ritual connected with the feast of St. Constantine and Helena in early June. Whether you're part of the "chosen few" or not, Yves’ wild Bulgarian dances will get your feet "hot" for sure. State forest rangers have already been alerted and approval is pending . . .
French-Canadian - Campers will be invited to take part in "Le Charivari", a noise-making contest below the bedroom window of a newlywed couple who has refused to invite the rest of the village to a dance party. The culprits also have to pay a "tax" or host a wild party in their home. This "ritual" will be combined with les Fêtes de la St. Jean, midsummer festivities.Follow Jeff to the Woodlands Salsa Club, the hottest Latin lounge to be found in anyone’s redwoods.
Café Mendocino - We bring back the good old days of the international folkdance cafe.
Argentine Milonga — Join us in a night that recreates The Golden Age of Tango at the Confiteria IDEAL de Mendocino. From slumming aristocrats to starving artists and just simple people of the streets, all levels of 1930s society join to dance the Tango, the Tango Vals and the Milonga at Argentina's, and for tonight Mendocino's, hottest Tango Coffee House.
Antebellum Ball — We will end camp with an Antebellum Ball in mid-nineteenth century America.
