Fine Dining with Annie Johnston and Crew Plus Jeff O'Connor The cultural culinary delights enjoyed at Folklore Camp are legendary. This year we welcome a new cook from Oregon - Annie Johnston. Highly recommended & highly experienced, we look forward to her creations. Jeff O’Connor will also be in the kitchen again! This time as a consultant and baker. We are all in for a great week of fine international dining!
PARTY THEMES
Each day of camp is fashioned to recognize a culture of the world. Meals, pre-dinner activities, decorations and party festivities work together to create an atmosphere of celebration and learning. Each weaves folk arts, traditions, high spirits, humor and magic into our stunning international tapestry. Our “Teacher Parties” this year are Balkan, Celtic, and Brazilian. Each of our dance teachers will have a party that reflects some aspect of their dances and the related culture. If you register, you will receive more information on all the parties in a second flyer in April.
Our Party Themes this Year are ...
WILD WILD WEST - Kick the dust off yer boots, leave yer pistols at the door, and join us for a rip roarin' time at the "Little River Saloon!" You might see Annie Oakley, Wild Bill, or some sort of desperado. Come as a dance hall girl, gold digger, greenhorn, gunslinger or the local sheriff!
NORTH AFRICAN – Morocco/Algeria/ Egypt/Tunisia… Out of the sands of the Sahara come camel caravans to our Mendoasis for an exotic blending of ancient and modern--alive (or well preserved)--with Pharaohs, mummies, belly-dancers, snake-charmers--all welcome!
BALKAN – Break out your old “Kolo Belt”, and your Opanci and get in line! We’ll be gathering in the grove to dance and sing in one of the most beautiful settings on earth. Add to this great music, great food, highlighted by our lamb barbecue, and wonderful company. Opa!
SCOTTISH/CAPE BRETON - Join us in a celebration of “Samhuinn”, the ancient Celtic New Year. You might come dressed in a scary costume; the doors to the Otherworld are open on this night you know. You could be in store for a great treat, or you might get tricked, sound familiar? Also, bring your best story, for this dark and stormy night marks the beginning of the "story-telling"/"ceilidh" season.
40'S SWING/Auction Night - The ever-popular Big Band sound was an elixir in a time of global struggle, and our USO party will lift your spirits as it provides "dance til' you drop" energy and fun!
BRAZILIAN SAMBA - Welcome to the first Woodlands official Samba School. No, there is no “ballroom position” in this school. Instead we teach the dance movements that were brought to Brazil by the people of Africa. Show off your newly learned Samba dancing skills at our version of Brazil's most famous annual festival, “Carnival”. Get ready for a night of extravagant costumes, pounding percussion ensembles and the energetic and enthusiastic dancing.
WALTZ AROUND THE WORLD BALL - We'll glide around the floor and celebrate favorite traditional, and maybe some untraditional (does anyone remember the "Great Waltz of China"?), waltzes of the world. This will be a terrific opportunity for a last night dance with the friends you have met at Folklore Camp 2005.
